Southeast Asia Business Trip Diary: Changeover from 4 Hours to 1.5 Hours

Last month I went to Indonesia to visit an old customer who had bought our FTTH optical cable manufacturing machine two years ago. His surname is Chen. He makes butterfly drop cables locally – the factory isn’t big, but business is steady.

Before I went, he messaged me on WeChat: “Old Liu, the equipment doesn’t have any major problems – it’s just that changeover is too slow. Every time we switch specifications, the operators have to fiddle around for four or five hours, and output can’t keep up. Come over and take a look.”

I said sure, I’d stop by on the way.

When I arrived at his factory, I went to the workshop first. Mr. Chen pulled me aside for tea and said orders were messy these days – single-core today, dual-core tomorrow, round drop cable the day after. Every changeover, the operators manually entered parameters – pitch, tension, temperature, speed – one by one. After entering them, trial production; after trial production, more adjustment. Back and forth.

“Don’t you have recipe storage?” I asked him.

He paused: “What recipe?”

I took him to the workshop, over to the FTTH optical cable manufacturing machine. The touchscreen interface was still in English – the operators couldn’t really read it, let alone know there was such a thing as recipe management.

I opened the recipe interface and pointed to the product names on the screen: “Look – you can store process parameters for 20 products here. You just need to save the parameters for each specification in advance. During changeover, select it, tap ‘Load,’ and all parameters jump into place automatically.”

Mr. Chen was skeptical: “That simple?”

I had the operator try it on the spot. Select “dual-core butterfly drop cable,” tap “Load” – over a dozen parameters on the screen jumped into place instantly. Start trial production, and the first reel of cable came off the line. We measured pitch and concentricity – all within tolerance. Less than ten minutes total.

Mr. Chen looked at his watch, then at me, and said one thing: “Something that used to take us four or five hours now takes ten minutes?”

I said: “Changeover time compressed from four or five hours to under an hour and a half – the time saved is capacity.”

That afternoon, I also demonstrated the recipe function on the other equipment on the fiber optic cable production line – the fiber coloring machine, secondary coating line for optical fiber, loose tube line, and the SZ stranding line and fiber optic cable sheathing line he planned to buy later. Every machine supports one-touch recipe loading.

Why Is One Recipe Function Worth the Price of a Production Line?

On the flight back, I kept thinking about this.

A fiber optic cable making machine – the quotation lists precision, capacity, power. But what really determines whether the customer makes money is often these “unremarkable” functions.

Recipe storage looks like just “saving parameters.” But it solves the biggest headache for cable factories – changeover efficiency under multi-variety, small-batch orders.

For every machine on an optical fiber cable production line, from the fiber optic coloring line to the indoor optical fiber production line, every hour shaved off changeover time means hundreds of extra kilometers of cable per year. At current cable prices, the customer can do the math.

Those “Unremarkable but Valuable” Functions on Hongkai Equipment

Recipe storage: One-touch loading of process parameters for 20 products, changeover within 1.5 hours.

Multi-language touchscreen: One-touch switching between Chinese and English – operators work in their native language, no fear of tapping wrong.

Alarm troubleshooting guidance: The touchscreen tells operators directly “where to check first” – common faults can be solved on their own.

Standard wear-parts kit: Belts, bearings, sensors, fuses shipped with the equipment – no need to wait for the manufacturer to ship when something breaks.

Remote diagnostics: Optional remote access module – engineers remotely view equipment status, reducing downtime.

These functions may seem minor individually, but together they make the difference between “equipment that’s easy to use” and “equipment that isn’t.”

📩 Get a Recipe Storage Function Demo and Configuration Proposal

If you are procuring a fiber optic cable production line for an overseas project, or want to learn about Hongkai’s recipe storage function and other operator-convenience designs, feel free to contact the Hongkai technical team.

Just tell us three things:

  1. What type of cable do you want to make? (Loose-tube / FTTH / indoor cable)

  2. Where will the factory be built? (This affects operator language and voltage system)

  3. Approximately what capacity? (How many kilometers per month or per year)

We will provide a preliminary equipment configuration proposal, touchscreen function demonstration, and quotation within 5 working days.
